| Purpose |
|
|
The purpose of the Senior Services Department is to enhance the quality of life for older adults in Stanly County by providing a range of services, programs, supports, and opportunities for adults 60 years old and older.

| Outside Speakers provide both interesting and educational programs on a variety of topics. |

| Luncheons are held monthly, offering programs, meals, and opportunities to socialize. |

| Center Piece, the monthly newsletter, provides articles of interest and education, news of activities, trips, and events, and a calendar of programs at the Senior Center. |
|
|
Ladies Lunch Bunch is a monthly luncheon get together for fun and fellowship at different restaurants in the county.
Book Club participants meet monthly to discuss a pre-selected book through the library. The discussion is relaxed and open, giving everyone time to express their opinions.
Card Games consist of Bridge and Canasta which are played once a week. An instructor is available to teach these games. Duplicate Bridge as well as Contract Bridge are played.

Fitness and Health Programs
Exercise Classes are held Monday through Thursday at 1:15 pm for both men and women to maintain fitness and have fun. These classes are free of charge.
Dance Classes are held weekly at the Senior Center. A variety of dance is offered, including classes in ballroom dance, western square dance, and line dancing. A monthly dance, usually the third Friday of the month, is open to the public.
Ping Pong & Shuffleboard are always looking for new players. Please call the Senior Center to sign up!

Classes
Classes are offered in a variety of different interests. They are taught by generous volunteers of the Senior Center and also provided by Stanly Community College (some classes require fees but many do not). Some of the classes are listed below and vary every month, so look in the Center Piece for an updated listing. Many outside groups, organizations, and clubs hold meetings at the Senior Center. These meetings are usually included in the Center Piece, as well.

Computer Classes are usually free and are for beginners to intermediate students.

Trips
Both day and overnight trips are offered through the Senior Center throughout the year. Open to all adults, these trips combine education, fun and fellowship. See our Center Piece newsletter for information on upcoming trips.

Senior Games & Silver Arts
Co-Sponsored by the Albemarle Parks & Recreation, Troy-Montgomery Senior Center, and the Stanly County Senior Services, the Uwharrie Senior Games and Silver Arts give those 55 and above an opportunity to participate and excel both physically and creatively. This organized, competitive program offers opportunities to advance to State and National Senior Games. A wellness and prevention program to keep the body, mind, and spirit fit, Senior Games is based on fitness, fun, friends, family and fellowship.

Employment Opportunities
The Title V, Senior Employment Program, is designed to help adults age 55 plus with limited family income. Participants work 20 hours week in county offices earning minimum wage while they continue to look for unsubsidized employment. They also attend quarterly Job Club meetings and receive one on one assistance with preparing a resume, interview skills, etc.

Information and Assistance: A service which assists older adults, their families and others acting on behalf of older adults, in their efforts to acquire information about programs and other services, and to obtain appropriate services to meet their needs.
|
|

|
|
Congregate Nutrition: sites provide a nutritious and delicious mid-day meal, along with daily educational and recreational programs at four sites in the county. These four sites are located at Albemarle, Norwood, Oakboro, and Locust.
|

|
Home Delivered Meals: are available to eligible home-bound adults and are delivered by volunteers each week-day. (There is a waiting list)
|
|
| Supplemental Meals Program: provides eligible seniors with 2 or more cans per day of Ensure Plus, Boost Plus, or Glucerna Shake. |
|
|
In-Home Services: provide home management assistance, limited personal
care, and short-term relief for unpaid caregivers to eligible senior adults.
(There is a waiting list)

|
| Family Caregiver Support Program: provides information and assistance, help in receiving services, education events, short-term respite, and supplemental services (such as incontinence supplies) to eligible caregivers of older adults. The Senior Center hosts an annual caregivers fair in November. |

|
| Transportation: SCUSA provides transportation to medical appointments, shopping, human services agencies, and nutrition sites. |
|
|
Other Services:

|
"Are You OK?" is a free computerized telephone contact to senior adults who live alone and desire this added sense of security.
|
|
|
Tax Aides provides free income tax preparation for older adults during tax season.
|
|
|
Senior Tar Heel Cards enable adults 60 years old and older to receive discounts on goods and services at local participating businesses.
|
|
|
SHIIP--Senior Health Insurance Information Program is a service where volunteers give seniors guidance and counseling on their options with Medicare, Medicare supplements, and long-term care insurance, without pressure, selling tactics, and confusing terms.
|
|
|
Prescription Service assists older adults in prescription programs and accessing lower prices for prescription drugs.
|
|
|
Blood Pressure Checks are usually offered once or twice a month, free of charge. Please check the Center Piece for the schedule.
|
|
|
Alzheimer’s Support Group meets at the Senior Center the third Tuesday of each month at 2pm.
|
|
|
Volunteers of all ages are welcome at the Senior Center. Numerous and rewarding opportunities are available for individuals who desire to volunteer in one of our many programs. For more information on becoming a volunteer contact the Stanly County Department of Senior Services.
